The British designer Antony Price, the visionary UK-based designer behind some of the most iconic looks worn by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has passed away aged 80.

He was celebrated for his architectural shapes and theatrical styles, such as the soft-colored suits that featured in rock band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "their hit Rio".

"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message online."

His passing follows less than a month after he presented his most recent collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. The performer Lily Allen walked in a dress inspired by the notorious black velvet "revenge dress" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.

A Pioneering Career

A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price moved to London in the early 1960s to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he started his work in men's fashion at the company Stirling Copper and was responsible for the form-fitting, button-fly pants that rock legend Mick Jagger famously wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He established his eponymous line in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show opened with looks from supermodel Jerry Hall, who also wore the wedding dress Price created for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A key creative partner of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price created the iconic jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to fuse elements of men's and women's fashion along with his masterful technique in shaping body-hugging looks established him as a "true original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.

In the 1990s, he started creating outfits for Camilla, now Queen Consort, which included various looks for her tour of the United States after becoming Duchess.

Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in conjunction with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

  • Sculpted Silhouettes: Central to his design philosophy.
  • Dramatic Impact: Defining an era of music fashion.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • A Client List from Rock to Royalty: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.

The industry mourns the loss to a true visionary whose legacy on the visual landscape of music remains profoundly felt.
