Chernobyl Catastrophe Containment Structure No Longer Blocks Harmful Radiation, Requires Major Repair – IAEA

The protective shield covering the Chernobyl nuclear reactor in Ukraine can no longer perform its primary safety function of containing radioactive material, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). This failure follows a drone strike earlier this year that blew a hole in the protective shell.

Damage from Aerial Attack Degrades Safety System

An attack by an unmanned aerial vehicle in the second month of the year caused a breach in the so-called “New Safe Confinement” structure. This enormous protective structure, constructed for €1.5bn with work finishing in 2019, was designed to contain radiation over the long term. An IAEA inspection last week confirmed that the drone impact had weakened the structural integrity of the steel arch.

The containment arch's main safety functions, such as confinement, are no longer operational, said IAEA head Rafael Grossi. He added that the mission confirmed no lasting harm to key support structures or monitoring systems.

Historical Context of the Chornobyl Containment

The original 1986 disaster at the Chernobyl plant – at a time when Ukraine was part of the USSR – spewed radiation over much of Europe. During a frantic response, Soviet engineers built a concrete “sarcophagus” over the ruined reactor, but it had a three-decade design life. The New Safe Confinement was erected to allow for the future dismantling of the old sarcophagus, the damaged reactor building, and the melted nuclear fuel itself.

Present Status and Required Actions

While some repairs have been carried out, agency officials emphasized that comprehensive restoration is essential. This is required to stop additional deterioration and to ensure long-term nuclear safety. Officials in Ukraine previously reported that a drone armed with a powerful explosive struck the plant, causing a fire and compromising the outer shielding.
