Dern, who appeared with her mother in various films like Wild at Heart and Rambling Rose, referred to her as “my wonderful hero as well as my precious gift being my mom”, stating that she was by her side during her final moments.

“She was the greatest daughter, mother, grandmother, actress, artist as well as empathetic spirit that only dreams could have seemingly created,” she wrote. “We were lucky to have her. She is now with the angels.”

Early Career and Rise to Fame

Ladd’s early career featured supporting roles on television series like Perry Mason whereas the 1970s featured her performing alongside actor Jack Nicholson in Chinatown.

That very year, 1974, she performed alongside Ellen Burstyn in the Martin Scorsese acclaimed film Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore. The performance landed Ladd her initial Oscar nod for best supporting actress.

Subsequent Years

Throughout the 1980s, she starred in the thriller the movie Black Widow and comedy sequel Christmas Vacation and also took part in Alice, a comedy program derived from her earlier movie.

In the following decade, she was given another best supporting actress Oscar nomination for her performance in David Lynch’s Wild at Heart, a cult classic where she played the parent of her biological child Laura Dern’s role. The following year she received another nomination for her acting in Rambling Rose which included her daughter.

“This was the film that Princess Diana selected as her very favorite, and she flew us to the UK for a premiere and a party for us,” Ladd said of Rambling Rose. “She positioned herself between us, holding both our hands, and crying, viewing our performance.”

That decade included parts in the comedy The Cemetery Club joining her again with Burstyn, the movie Primary Colors, a satirical film, starring John Travolta and the film by Alexander Payne Citizen Ruth, a dark comedy where she played the mother of Dern once more. The decade also saw her score TV award nominations for roles in Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman, Grace Under Fire, a sitcom and Touched by an Angel.

Partnerships with Her Daughter

She persisted in performing alongside her daughter in films blending humor and drama Daddy and Them, Lynch’s the movie Inland Empire and the series by Mike White comedy-drama series Enlightened, a TV series. Filmmaking Ventures

She additionally penned and directed the comedy Mrs Munck, a film that included Diane Ladd and former husband Bruce Dern. “Bruce is an excellent performer,” she mentioned. “I was honored to direct him in a movie. Indeed, I’m the only woman in recorded history to direct her ex-husband. I often joke: ‘I say ladies, if you seek payback, guide your former spouse.’ Though I’m just teasing.”

Family Ties

Ladd was also the third cousin of the great Tennessee Williams, who she called “a significant impact on my life”.

During 2018, she received an incorrect diagnosis with a pulmonary condition and advised she had just six months to live but she regained full health after her daughter transferred her to a different hospital.

“When you use your pain and prevent it from festering similar to a wound, instead use it to explore, to illuminate the way for yourself and others, then you are succeeding,” Ladd remarked.
