England to Launch UEFA Euro 2028 Campaign at the Etihad Stadium

The English squad will commence their Euro 2028 adventure at the Manchester City’s stadium, on the condition that they attain the anticipated passage for a competition staged throughout most of the United Kingdom and the Ireland.

The Etihad Stadium has not staged an Three Lions game since May 2016, when Turkey were defeated 2-1 in a warm-up game, but is highly likely to welcome the national team for their first match on a Saturday in June 2028.

The team are planned to play their final two group matches at Wembley Stadium, but, if they top Group B, their round of 16 match would take place at St James’ Park. Placing second would mean commencing the elimination stage at Everton’s ground.

Tournament Opening and Demonstration

The championship was inaugurated at an ceremony in Piccadilly Circus on Wednesday evening. Senior figures from European football’s governing body and the host FAs were barracked as they approached the location by around fifty protesters, who called for Israel to be kicked out from the sport because of the conflict in Gaza.

Placards were raised with phrases saying “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while demonstrators shouted: “Kick Israel out.”

Tournament Timeline

The inaugural fixture of Euro 2028 will be played at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, on Friday 9 June, a game that will involve Wales if they qualify.

The national stadium will host the penultimate rounds and the title decider, which will be played on Sunday 9 July with a kick-off time at 5pm.

It is hoped that an earlier kick-off, which will also be implemented for UEFA Champions League finals from next season, will attract households and help connect with a broader range of fans.

Host Nations

The Ireland are due to play their initial fixture at the Dublin stadium and Scotland would play similarly at Hampden Park.

Each host nation’s squad will participate in the preliminary stage; two guaranteed slots will be reserved for any that do not reach Euro 2028 through that route.

Venues and Knockout Stage

Aston Villa’s stadium and Spurs’ ground finalize the nine tournament locations. Each one will hold at least one playoff fixture, with the quarter-finals played at every host’s main arena.

The qualification draw will be held in Belfast, which was excluded as a host city last year when it emerged the proposed venue could not be redeveloped in time, on a date in late 2026.

Leadership Comment

“This will be a tournament for the followers and a showcase of everything we love about the football – its emotion and power to foster unity.”

Over 3 million passes, a all-time high for a men’s European Championship, are projected to be made available to attendees.
