Born in Trowbridge, Wiltshire, in 1931, Burton became one of the industry’s most admired broadcasters, introducing the wonder of classical music to the general public.
His tenure as the BBC's head of music and arts in the sixties and seventies was marked by critically praised work, including the programme The Golden Ring.
He also launched the Young Musician of the Year competition in 1978, a showcase that uncovered talents such as violinist Nicola Benedetti.
