Space Traveler Discloses Emotional Distress Following ‘Tsunami of Backlash After Historic Trip

A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her emotional downturn after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the wake of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

Amanda Nguyen – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission in April, which also featured celebrity crewmates.

The mission was widely scrutinized by some, who questioned its cost and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction eclipsed her moment under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a online statement, recalling a phone call from a mission companion in the aftermath of the journey.

She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

The researcher, who has conducted studies in women's health research and operated research during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – including her lab work and extensive preparation to the historic significance of her roots – was overshadowed under the tide of gendered attacks.

She is best known for her groundbreaking advocacy protecting the rights of victims of sexual violence.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was put on hold after surviving a rape during her university years, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

A Path to Recovery

Months following reaching space, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she thanked the supporters whose kindness pulled her through. “You were my salvation,” she said.

She concluded that despite the negativity, considerable good had come out of the flight, including elevated attention for her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.

Flight Details

The self-operating New Shepard rocket lifted off from its launch site in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that passed the edge of space.

The group of women also included accomplished professionals from various fields.
