Seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has been granted a wild-card entry for the first Grand Slam of the year, commencing on January 18 in the city of Melbourne.

Historic Return to the Australian Courts

Tournament officials confirmed on the weekend that the 45-year-old icon will grace the courts again at the tournament venue a remarkable 28 years after her debut. Back in 1998, she overcame her sibling Serena in the early stage before bowing out in the last eight to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.

Gearing Up for the Australian Summer

The tennis star had earlier stated in November her plans to compete in Auckland, New Zealand, where she was likewise awarded a special entry, two weeks prior to the Australian Open. The Australian Open noted that Williams is also entered to participate in Australia's Hobart International a week later, just before the action begins at Melbourne Park.

Her last appearance in Melbourne was in 2021, and she has finished runner-up in the women’s singles on two separate instances, losing to Serena in the championship matches of 2003 and 2017.

"I’m excited to return in Australia and eagerly anticipating competing during the Australian summer," Williams stated. "I have experienced so many incredible memories there, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to return to a venue that has been so significant to my professional journey."

Williams' overall record at the Australian Open stands at an impressive 54 victories and 21 losses. The upcoming edition will represent the 22nd time she has competed in the main draw.

Setting a Fresh Benchmark

The tournament indicated that Williams is set to become the most senior female player to take part in an Open's singles competition, eclipsing the record formerly set by Japanese Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she was defeated in the first round at Melbourne Park in 2015.
