The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Selected the Incorrect Critical Role Song

The Mighty Nein, the newest animated adventure from the beloved role-playing group, unveiled a new introductory sequence. It features our favorite cast of misfits, outcasts, and rogues fighting hard and making their mark, while teasing at multiple heart-wrenching backstories for characters such as Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, the character Fjord.

All in all, the intro appears amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that something was missing in the song choice.

This sequence employs "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar song created by producer and singer the talented musician. It's a track from the official score of that title, the second one released by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division their music brand. It's a great sentimental option, and I suspect that devotees of the second campaign will love its inclusion.

Personally, The series' opening fails to capture the excitement and energy that accompanied the show's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", written by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit in my view when it was first revealed in 2015, and it only got better when cast member Sam Riegel wrote words to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.

Featuring vocals from one actress, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as the writer, the song was catchy and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't even watched the second campaign at that point, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my phone. It's a song that excites you before you dive into an installment of fantasy hijinks.

The Mighty Nein's intro with "the new song" doesn't strike the right notes in my opinion. It's an impressive piece of music, but from what I know of this party, I can't help but feel that its tone is a little off.

Of course, Critical Role has stated that the animated show will have a few changes and differences from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its intro seems to be one of them.

This animated adventure will be available to watch on Prime Video from Nov. 19. For those eager until then, or wish to prepare to get to know the characters of the second series, the original episodes are accessible on the audio platform and the video site.
