The Porcine Pardon: Hog Named Six Seven Spared by Miami-Dade Mayor.

It might not have been at the equivalent scale as granting clemency to festive fowl, but the Miami-Dade County mayor conducted a Donald Trump moment this week by formally pardoning the life of a pig named Six Seven.

Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.

“This animal is guiltless. Clemency is justified for her. She has committed zero crimes,” Levine Cava said in a speech with inescapable allusions to the extraordinary and sizable number of pardons issued from the start of the beginning of a new presidential term.

“Unless you count eating half a dozen apples per day,” the mayor added. “May this pig enjoy a long and happy life free from concern.”

The event, which both honors and questions the region’s Hispanic tradition of feasting on pork during the holidays, was founded to replicate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.

The swine, donated by a Coral Gables firefighter, was given its name from the popular vernacular phrase of young people yelling “6-7” – inspired by a hip-hop line – often without clear purpose. The trend became so widespread that a prominent word reference recently named “six-seven” its top term for the year.

A Future Secured

The pardoned swine is now scheduled to spend its days at a countryside refuge “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the event’s official press release.

“The annual pig pardon has become a cherished method to open the end-of-year celebrations,” said the event host, in a decidedly positive message.

“It embodies the character of Miami: vibrant, diverse, and rooted in traditions that bring people together. Each year, we are honored to observe heritage and mercy in a way only Miami can.”

Participants enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach croquetas and cafecito as they toasted Six Seven’s big moment.
