Travis Baldree, known for his bestselling comfort fantasy stories, recently released his latest installment in the set. Titled Brigands and Breadknives, the narrative follows Fern the ratkin when she begins a typical adventure story following walking away from her flourishing business.

A Departure from Cozy Themes

In contrast to the earlier stories in the collection, which centered on building a life, Brigands and Breadknives explores the theme of disappointing people you care about. Travis Baldree explained that this book is about grasping to make tough choices who you cherish.

"This story is about understanding to disappoint people whom you value, and mastering to say no," he noted. "I am writing a distinct story. Will readers going to be let down? Is it important? Must I pursue my true passion personally, though it could alienate someone?"

Personal Struggles Shaping the Plot

Travis Baldree noted that his personal challenges have consistently influenced his books. Before, he was involved in video game design, designing projects like the game Torchlight and Rebel Galaxy game. His decision to step away from that career to produce audio stories inspired the protagonist Viv's new path in the first book.

"I found during the debut story that during writing a narrative, you inevitably put a lot of yourself within," he commented. "And when the audience respond to that, there's this really amazing moment of shared experience."

The Rise of Cozy Fantasy

According to the author, the rise of feel-good stories has surged in recent years, in part due to a desire for escape and personal bonds following the recent health crisis.

"Society feels a slightly in turmoil, and I think with the media we consume, most of us want a story that is comforting," he said. "I remember the pandemic, the show Game of Thrones premiered, and I was like, 'I love it, but I am not interested in seeing my favorite characters killed off.'"

Exploring Different Paths

While Viv obtained her happy ending in Legends and Lattes, Travis Baldree believed he couldn't rip that away from her by making her out from the cafe. Centering on Fern gave him the opportunity to delve into someone taking the opposite path—leaving a secure existence to go on an adventure.

"I don't think that the only way for issues are to open a business and start a cafe," he stated. "Everybody's unique, and additionally, we're individual at different points in our lives. The solution that worked for me a decade ago doesn't work for me today."

Developing the Setting

Unlike the previous books, which were set in quiet villages, Brigands & Breadknives involves a travel narrative that allowed Baldree to flesh out his fantasy world eschewing info-dumps. The adventure accompanied by Astryx and her talking sword Nigel the sword contains killer chickens, horrifying beasts, honorable mercenaries, and a unexpectedly calm sanctuary devoted to worshiping a eldritch god.

Next Endeavors

For his next project, Travis Baldree is venturing into new territory with a literary RPG story tentatively titled Four Bastards & a Baby.

"I've gone through hundreds of game-lit stories, and currently I have developed views about what I desire in a story," the author explained. "I prefer more characterization. I like resolution. Numerous LitRPGs try to maintain the status quo, and I reject that."

Future Stories

Enthusiasts of the setting of Legends and Lattes, Baldree has created a series of narratives featuring accounts about the baker character Thimble the baker and Viv's love interest the succubus, which will be issued in an forthcoming anthology. Additionally, he anticipates he'll revisit to the world to address his experience writing his new book, which is significantly longer and more story-oriented than his earlier books.

"I'll have a book about developing a difficult project that was incredibly tough for the author to do," he says.
